Stefano Barneschi studied at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan with Carlo De Martini, graduating in 1991; in the same year he joined Il Giardino Armonico, an ensemble at the forefront of early music performed on period instruments, becoming concertmaster in 2001. He has performed in the most prestigious national and international festivals and concert seasons alongside artists such as Isabelle Faust, Viktoria Mullova, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Giuliano Carmignola, Christophe Coin, Giovanni Sollima, Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Prohaska, Julia Lehzneva. His recognised expertise as concertmaster has brought him to lead many ensembles such as Kammerorchesterbasel, Anima Eterna Brugge, La Scintilla, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, L’Accademia Giocosa, I Barocchisti, Il Pomo d’Oro, the Claudiana Ensemble, La Divina Armonia. In October 2019 he made his debut as concertmaster of the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala in Milan performing Handel’s Giulio Cesare conducted by Giovanni Antonini. He has recorded for Teldec, Decca, Naive, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Winter&Winter, Passacaille, Amadeus, Sony, Alpha and many other labels. He plays a 1830 violin by Giacinto Santagiuliana.
